This is for my friend who recently applied for a study visa for 4 years ( $ Year degree programme).
He was wondering if he gets the Study permit for 4 years and his spouse would accompany him - Would the spouse get an open work permit for 4 years as well if she apply as soon as they come to Canada?
She can apply even along with him in home country when he applies for study visa. They just need to have enough funds (in addition to those needed for his study / living) for her stay for a year, since having a work permit does not mean she would immediately get a job, so unless the principal applicant is also going on a work permit with a confirmed job, having additional funds of around 6k CAD per person should be enough to get through with a spousal open work permit.
Please note, visas and work permits are only issued till the validity of passports.
