I have recently landed as a permanent resident.
I had my first IEC work permit in 2013. Where I has to wait / work 3 months before receiving my health card.
My second IEC work permit followed and I simply renewed me OHIP card. with a letter from my employer proving my employment.
I understand as a new resident I have to wait another 3 months until my health card is reinstated.
I have remained living in Canada all this time, although for the past 6 months I have been a tourist while my PR application was processing.
I have British Insurance and also the option of Benefits with my employer.
I have read that you can be exempt from the OHIP 3 month period if you have private cover.
What have others experienced after "landing" in Ontario....
