We just sent our applications and should be SA by the time we arrive in Canada on April 3. Once in Canada we will await PR for my wife. Regarding drivers license for my wife, does she need to wait to become a PR to apply for a Ontario drivers license? I mean, we will arrive early April and maybe wife will be SA by October (could be earlier or later, but will see). Hard for us to imagine my wife not being able to be covered under insurance to drive our vehicle during that time.
We have read she can aquire a letter proving her driving experience and length of having a drivers license in Sweden, but was not sure if this applied to only people who have PR or can be used for those people still in the application process to get PR.
Any help and/or insight would be greatly appreciated...
i don't believe it's required to have permanent status to get a driver's license in ontario. the service ontario website has all the information. it's really quite simple. assuming she comes from a country that Canada recongizes for license exchange, she will need to get her driving record from where she is licensed before she can exchange her current license.
How to apply
To switch your licence for an Ontario driver’s licence, you need to apply in-person at a DriveTest centre
You need to:
take an eye test
bring original identification showing your legal name, date of birth and signature
bring your original, valid out-of-province/foreign driver’s licence*
bring any original supporting documents that show proof of your driving experience
pay the applicable fees
fill out an application form (where you will state how long you have been driving)
Great. Thought it was strange if they expected someone to be in Canada and not be able to drive due to not being able to be insured. Thanks for the feedback and will aquire all necessary documentation for my wife.
