Ontario Child Benefit

I have a child PR sponsorship application pending, and my spouse and I have already been approved as sponsors. Our child is with us in Canada.

1) Will receiving the Ontario Child Benefit (OCB) next year count as social assistance, and will that jeopardize the application that is in process? (I know CCTB and UCCB are OK, but found nothing about the OCB)
2) If receiving the OCB will jeopardize the application, is it possible to opt out of receiving it?

I am not certain, but I have read that there are different types of childcare subsidies – one type is for individuals applying for a subsidy that is not considered welfare (“Child Care subsidy”), another type is for, (in Ontario), Ontario Works participants (“Ontario Child Benefit”), which is considered welfare.


You may want to contact the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre directly for some additional information. Also it may be a good idea to call Ontario Works directly and find out if Ontario Child Benefit falls under welfare. If Ontario Works confirms it is welfare than it would be advisable to opt out from it. If they tell you it is not welfare ask them to confirm in writing and collect it, and if CIC ever questions it present the letter from the Ontario government confirming that Ontario Child Benefit is not welfare.

The Ontario child benefit (OCB) is a non-taxable amount paid to help low- to moderate-income families provide for their children... OCB and child tax is the same thing
