one way ticket

hello, I am a canadian, who just married and lady from california. I am planning on flying to CA. at the end of the month and drive with my new wife home with our marrage certificate, outland application, and sponsorship application reciept and a letter from my employer showing i can support ourselves. My plan was to get a ride across the border with friends on way to a show in PA and fly one way to Ca to avoid buying a return ticket. Is there anyreason I couldn`t just show them the papers and be upfront at the border and explain the reason for the oneway ticket or is it just safest to buy a round trip and toss it to avoid the hassels?
