No longer studying in Canada, but have a valid study permit

Hi, I'm a U.S. citizen with a Canadian study permit that is valid until 2014, but I'm no longer attending university in Canada and don't plan on returning as a student. I'm planning a visit to Montreal next week and was wondering if I would encounter any issues at the border; Do I need to void my study permit in some way? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Since you are an American citizen, you don't require visitor visa (upto a certain period) or a TRV (temporary Resident Visa) like citizens/students form other country which are not under visa exemption treaty with Canada. I think, as long as your study permit is valid, it's upto you to choose to study or not. Usually no one gets deported and no one cares (like your college, unless something specific) and definitely it's up-to you to to study or travel across Canada without any restrictions or just keep sleeping in your room in Canada!!! So, you don't need to void your study permit. As long as you have that study permit, you can stay in Canada without any restrictions. Of course, to work you may or may not need a work visa, but that depends on country to country and you need to check with CIC as what exactly the rules are for American citizens regarding work permit. Moreover, since you are an American citizen, and Montreal is within the national borders of Canada, you will not face any problems during entry unless you do something really stupid like carry drugs/illegal stuff etc etc. You get my point right?
