we had submitted spousal sponsorship application nearly 3 months ago but still have not received application no or file no

It can also take three months to get AOR. Don't panic yet.

A similar question I had
Is the AOR when they give you the instructions to link your application online or is that a separate message from them? So there is potentially months wait before you can basically do anything at all?

With your AOR you should receive your client number - your UCI. That number makes linking easier. You can try to link your application earlier with passport details or payment receipts, but the UCI is easier .
