New Zealander to stay longer in Canada

Hi all,

My fiancé and I moved to Canada in August this year and we love it here already, problem is we would like to stay longer but I'm on a New Zealand IEC so I am only permitted a year, however by fiancé is Australian and he can get another 2years. My question is I have heard that because we became common law partners that I should be able to ride off his next visa. Is this true? If so how do I go about it?
I would really appreciate any feedback.

IEC in and of itself only covers the applicant and not spouses, common-law partners, etc - see http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/australia-australie/experience_canada_experience/faq.aspx#aus-9

You may be eligible for a 'spousal' open work permit if your fiance is a skilled worker - see Who can apply for an open work permit? (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=177&t=17). (I don't believe IEC precludes this)

Of course - if you're marrying him soon and getting an Aussie passport, you could apply to the Australian working holiday program yourself
