I'm going to be turning 18 next year and It would be great if I got some advice on what steps I should take when it comes to my immigration documents. At the moment I'm under my father's work permit and recently my family sent in a permanent residency application. When I went to the border I was told that I would need to get a student visa as I turn 18. Would this be the right thing to do or is there anything else I should be doing?

That is correct. As you are not a permanent resident yet, you need to apply for a student visa and pay international student fees in university/college.

If you turned 18, you will need a change of status and you will have to apply for a student visa until your family's PR application is approved. You will however continue to be a dependent under the PR application as the age limit of dependent children (for immigration purposes) has changed from “under 19” to “under 22" for all new applications received on or after October 24, 2017.

Do you currently have a study permit or visitor status? When does your current status expire?

What you need to do depends on what you want to do. If you want to go to college or university, whether you are 17 or 18 years old, you will need to apply for a study permit.

If you don't want to go to college or university, then you will need to apply to extend your status as a visitor.

My friend was also under her dads work permit and she didn't have to apply for a study permit when she turned 18. They got their PR documents when she almost turned 19 and never had any problems. Now she is a citizen and nobody asked about that year because she was living with her parents
