My wife has submitted her sponsorship application in August 2013 and we are awaiting step 1 to be complete. We also sent in an OWP application with the PR application.
Currently she has a closed work permit which expires in December, the same time her passport expires. She is still currently employed.
The question is, do we renew her passport now? Or should we renew it after we hear back from step 1 in the PR process once she gets the OWP?
What are the implications of renewing now with her current work permit versus renewing later with her open work permit (assuming she gets it)?

who is sponsor what kind of application if you are waiting for some kind of stamp on your passport it should be valid atleast 6 months by the time they stamp.
I wasn't berating you or anything, just clearing it up so the OP didn't begin to worry something else was amiss. We all know how stressful it is waiting on this paperwork and little statements that might not even apply to us tend to freak us out and start worrying! LOL I just wanted to make sure this didn't happen in this case.
I’m sorry I can’t be of more help, but we are in a similar situation. I’m sponsoring my husband Inland. We sent our App in Aug 2013 also.
My husbands passport expires in November. We did apply for OWP as well, but he doesn’t currently have a work permit.
The Costa Rican Consulate told my husband to come in personal for a new passport, and once it has been issued, to send the copies of the new passport into Immigration.
I am not 100% though on what will happen with the Visitor Visa that is in his current passport. It is expired, and my husband is on Implied Status as we did apply for an extension BEFORE it expired.
Hope you will get a more helpful answer…I will be keeping watch too! Lol
Have you tried calling your wife’s consulate and seeing what advice they have?

Your wifes owp is expiring in dec 2014 because same time passport is expiring. After that what will be her status?. by the time they request her passport you should renew it other wise they cant stamp?.
With regards to transfering of owp stamp (not sure its stamp or not) you need to contact that department.
At the end passport should be valid by the time they request for stamping. thats basic. you need to see how much time your embassy takes for renewing it and if needed to transfer owp to new passport how much time and
check forums or trackitt to see the status of inland applications applied
