most cell phone would work ....but dont forget to carry a socket adapter/converter for ur charger.
just bring your basic clothes and all leather stuff, jacket n shoes etc is little expensive here, most smartphones would work here, its better to buy laptop here coz you will get a replacement or refund warranty by almost all sellers(i like futureshop, its a pretty good store here)
a universal plug pin converter might be very useful for charging ur phone or laptop at different airports , if you get stranded etc, also for canada, we use flat pin here
you will be pretty fine with about $1000 cash
dont miss ur orientation event at the college when you get here , you will learn many useful things
