I just had my medical last Nov. 17, 2008 and my passport expires on Oct 2, 2009. I renewed my passport here in Middle East but I was informed that it will take 45 days to get, but then I pursue to renew it. I Just want to ask whether I could give my old passport (exp oct 2, 2009) in case they'll ask for PPR? or should I wait for the renewed one? I am just very eager to receive my visa in case...and also worried if PPR (new passport) forwarded late.....

Thanks

Your passport expires in about 10 months, you do not need to renew it right now as they may ask you for PPR soon. If your Passport expires before you leave to Canada, then you can renew it, all the visas on the old passport will still be valid as the new and old will be attached together.

You can renew your old passport with a stamp from consulate on one of the page saying that it is renewed til certain date. If your passport is already expired, you do not need to give your old passport, you just get new and old is canceled automatically. But if you have visas on the old, then you have to give it to them (consulate), so they can stamp it that the passport is canceled but the visas are valid.

You are getting a new passport and should wait for the new one. Your old passport becomes an invalid document as soon as a new one is issued.

Not all countries do so , most countries issue a new passport. it would differ from country to country and may not necessarily apply here as Shyle has pointed out it is a new document

Irrespective of what your consulate stamps , the visas need to be transferred from your old passport to your new passport. Airlines and many countries do not allow the use of visas from expired passports and tell you to go get all the visas transferred as your new passport is the only legal travel doc they recognise.

Again airlines may hold you back if you are travelling with a passport with less than 6 months validity. A lot of countries do not allow visitors/foreigners to travel through their country with passports expiring in less than 6 months.
