Hi, me again,
I have been doing some research and in Canada "a woman cannot legally take her husband's name "( on any legal paperwork,SIN, license, Medicare, etc.) At least my research so far says) But in the US I can and intend to. I am filing as Angela ____ (his surname) even though my birth certificate says my maiden name? But legally, in the US, my married name is ____.
As far as the Canadian governent is concerned ( in my opinion, and as all my US id's will state) My last name will be the same as his. Am I wrong? This is probably a 'duh' question but I was a tad confused and the Canadian goverment may be too.

In Canada you CAN take your husband's last name, the only exception is Quebec. Are you planning to live in Quebec? I'm not 100% if the same rule would apply if you change your name in the US and then move to Quebec with all of your documents already in your married name. If you're not living in Quebec, then this won't be an issue at all.

I am filing (and intend on living, at least for a time) in Quebec. But I wasn't sure of the situation as I am beginning my life as a Canadian as Mrs.____. As if ( in a way) I was 'born' as Angela ____ (per my paperwork). In my opinion. Though we are possibly going to move to Ontario for a time (as it easier for us both to find jobs while we polish up our French).
Thanks for the start. :) I will continue my research as I don't want to thoroughly confuse anyone. As I'm sure the Immigration office sees a ton these forms and I don't want delay mine. This situation probably could be confusing. I will play the cards as I'm dealt of course. Thank you so much for clearing that up. Maybe I can email or call Quebec specifically.

If your ID is in your madien name, you can always apply, then change it upon landing.

Alberta, at least, will let you change it whenever you want and carry ID in both names. (For some reason...)

Cool. My ID's should already be in my married name. Actually I'll have to file later than I had planned because I won't have my IDs yet :P (duh).Where is my brain.

I'm sponsoring my husband, and even though I know I can change my last name, I will not be adding his surname onto mine for exactly that reason. I know it should be fine, however, I don't want there to be ANY confusion at all on part of the immigration officers, and therefore I'm waiting until he lands to add his name onto my last name (I'm not in Quebec though).

Exactly my reasoning, plus changing my ID will further delay filing my application lol. :)

Your nationality is important to your question because, for this to work, your passport will need your new legal name so that your PR is issued in your married name and Quebec doensn't register you under another name. Otherwise, if your PR is issued under your maiden name your problem won't be resolved.

i found this on another thread. I hope others find it helpful. ;) :D
