Hi Guys,

I am a Canadian PR and planning to get married in Tamilnadu, India ealry next year (2009). The marriage is going to be held based on Islamic rituals with presence of Qazi (Priest), parents from both sides and about 500 guests. I will be getting a marriage certificate from a local Islamic Jamaath (Authority) soon after the marriage and this certificate will be in Tamil. I am planning to get it translated in English and attested by a lawyer (notary public). Would this document suffice? Do I still need to do a Civil Marriage registration?
I would appreciate if you guys could share your advice on this.

Thanks.

According to Indian law you will have to register your marriage in marriage registrar's office in civil court to be considered legally married. Some Islamic countries consider marriage certificate from a local Islamic Jamaath a valid legal document but not in India. You could easily verify this with a lawyer in India. Registering marriage in marriage registrar's office in civil court would be much more easier and the certificate you get will be in English as well, which will save the pain of getting it translated and attested.

Is there anyone from India who have got the PR through Urdu Nikah nama and along with the english translation done from the licensed translator from Canada?.
