I'm sorry if this question is repetitive but I wasn't able to find an answer for it. My uncle got a four year multiple entry visa this month. I understand that he can only stay in Canada for 6 months but is that for a calendar year? Or can he leave and return a few month back later. Much appreciated for your response.

6 month is the maximum time that he could possibly stay. When he arrives in Canada, they could give him 6 months, give him less, or even outright refuse him entry. It all depends on his overstay risk. Having said that, if he is granted 6 months, its a continuous 6 months, so if he lands Oct 2016, he has to leave on April 2017. When he leaves, he can try to come back Canada, but he shouldn't come back so soon after leaving otherwise they might refuse him entry if they think he's coming back so soon to live here.

Thank you so much for your reply. He is coming in two weeks and his return ticket is for March 2017. I guess, he won't be able to come back until 2018 or so..he just wants to come and visit my mother as they're both retired and would like to enjoy their retirements and travel around Canada but of course, he wouldn't want to overstay and risk refusal entry at the border.

1. If he wanted to stay longer, than the authorized entry, he could apply for an extension in Canada. When he leaves, he doesn't have to remain outside Canada for 6 months, as long as he is not staying for 6 months, and then returning a week a later, he should be fine.
