I have a visitor with multi-entry visa, and her current staying period is expiring in a month. I've applied for extension at CIC website, but am afraid they won't make it on time (although I applied more than 30 days before her last day). Has anybody recently extended visitor's stay by simply leaving and re-entering Canada? I mean crossing Canada-US border and immediately turning back and asking for 4-5 month stay at point of entry - has anybody done this successfully?

You can certainly try - however there is no guarantee your stay will be extended when you re-enter Canada and also no guarantee you will actually be allowed back into Canada.
It's better to apply for an extension from within Canada. The application must reach CIC before you current stay expires (it does not need to arrive at CIC a full 30 days early - this is just a guideline).
Two days ago our application was approved, hurrah!! No medical checkup was requested, perhaps they looked into existing records and were satisfied by the one done half a year ago (purely my guess).
