Minimum wage for Nanny

Good morning,

I'd like to bring a Nanny to Canada. Looking at the HRSDC website for a Live-In Caregiver in Ontario the hourly rate is 10.77 so that would make the monthly rate 1723 with a room in rate of only 31.70 a week. I've never heard of a room being rented in a city for 31.70 especially with heat, electricity and water included. Why is this so low? Are we required to hire the nanny for 40 hours a week or can it be less (if you are a Canadian government employee full time is 37.5 hours a week)? If you own a second home can the live-in caregiver be placed there instead of in your primary residence?

"Employers must provide the live-in caregiver with suitable accommodation in the home of the person receiving care", see http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/foreign_workers/caregiver/requirements.shtml under Housing.

The minimum hours considered full time for a live-in caregiver is 30 hrs. a week, see here: http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/foreign_workers/caregiver/description.shtml

As for the amount you can charge for the room, I assume Ontario has decided that live-in caregivers shouldn't have to pay too much rent for their rooms. After all, they are often only working 30 hrs. a week and don't make a lot of money. If you look at Quebec, they are not allowed to charge them for room and board at all.

You must provide her food so I'm not sure placing her in a second home would work.

Having a live-in is the most expensive childcare option in most cases. If you're worried about cost, consider a live-out part time and hiring a cleaner once a week for 2-3 hours (if needed). Or if you have a napper that naps well and consistently, the live-out can do housekeeping. Most live-outs only do light housekeeping. You might find a college student or a mom with 1 young child looking for some work. Especially mom with 1 child. A lot of people won't let a nanny bring her own child. You could find a great nanny at rock bottom price if you go that route.

No - you can't. Live-in Caregiver means they must be living in the same residence as the person they are providing a service to.
