On the CIC Guide it states:

Medical instructions

You may either:

undergo an upfront medical examination by contacting a Panel Physician or
wait until your application is reviewed and medical instructions are provided to you by the immigration office.

I'm thinking, of course, that it's a much better choice to do it up front.

Does it really matter?
How long does it take to do it up front?
Does the doctor just deal with it? or do we have to wait on paper work from the doctor?

new rules are being put in place as we speak that suggests the medical will no longer be required upfront, so at this point it doesn't matter when it's submitted. apparently a new guide will be put online Dec 15, so if you're not submitting before then, I'd recommend waiting for the new guide to come out next week.

The doctor appointment is similar to a general physical, blood work and xrays. how long it takes depends on the doctor. the doctor will submit the information into the emedical system and will give you an "emedical receipt" that you send to CIC. CIC will then connect those exam results to your application.

My husband did his upfront...it is much better depending on the processing time of your country...the processing time of my country is 10 months and medical expires after a year...so we got it done upfront. CIC having the information upfront helps them to deal with the file at the moment and not putting it away waiting on the medical. makes sense?

The new CIC processing flowchart clearly asks you to wait for medical request!
