I have a question about health care coverage - my husband and I have a surprise pregnancy.

I am wondering if applying for Apple Health (Medicaid) and using that to help cover prenatal/hospital care costs would be seen by Canadian immigration as a problem.

My impression from what I've read here is that this would indeed be a problem, and Canada would reject me.

If that's the case, I need to know, so that I can apply for other more costly insurance options.

Over the past couple of years we've been paying for our few health care needs out-of-pocket, and we simply can't afford to do that anymore with the prenatal care and especially the hospital birth.

I want to make sure I don't mess anything up. We are going to do the sponsorship program (our application won't be processed until some time after I give birth) and I just want everything to work out okay.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not quite sure why you think Canada would reject you for this. IRCC won't even know about it and wouldn't care if they did.

It's just private insurance. That's not social assistance. As Canuck said, no issue at all.

You don't know what medicaid is - do you? It's not private insurance. It's a form of social assistance in the US.

Having said that - no impact to the application.

Sure I do, in the context of the US. There was nothing in the OPs statements or question that lead me to believe they were american? Or even in the US? Medicaid isn't an american only term...

The bigger point is, as long as the sponsor is not in receipt of Canadian social assistance, there is no reason to refuse.

Thank you for the helpful replies everyone.

I am an American living in the US and I'm considering applying for government medical assistance.

I read some posts on this forum that gave me the impression that the sponsored spouse being on any type of social assistance would result in their getting rejected from Canada.

The sponsor being on welfare in Canada will result in a refusal. Receiving government medical assistance in another country isn't even something that would need to be declared in the app.

You will have no issues from this, so go right ahead and apply for assistance.

Wonderful news!

Thank you.
