Hello,
So our situation is my fiance and I have known each other for 8 years. I live in the US and he lives in Canada, he eventually is going to sponsor me as his Spouse.. I was planning on visiting Canada (so we can get married and get the application in). I was planning on staying in Canada while the Spousal Sponsorship goes through. Do I need to apply for anything besides the marriage certificate or get a visa before I enter Canada? I'll have a one way ticket and I don't want to get turned around at the border. Thanks in advance.
If you are US citizen you don't need a visa to visit your fiance in Canada. After marriage he can sponsor you. About the requirement for sponsoring spouse, please read:
As an American you can stay here for 6 months as a visitor. You need to convince them at the border that you will be going back to the US when you're time is up - if they think you will overstay, they could deny entry or only allow you for a short time.
However if you do get in, you can extend your stay. My husband entered Canada in May and he was set to leave in November, but his stay was extended until next August.
