Quick question!

My fiance (USA) and I (CAN) are planning on getting married and then applying to have him move to Canada.

I can't seem to find any information on if there is extra documentation required of me if we decide to marry in NY, or him if we decide to marry in Canada.. other than if he was divorced we need verification from a Canadian Lawyer.

Are there really no extra requirements for a marriage license for foreign citizens?

Also, we're going with Outland when we do apply.. We both live very close to the Border and have freelance/work from home type jobs so we'd like to continue crossing the border very frequently to spend time with each other. So far we have managed to spend most of our time together, spending weeks together in either Canada or the US with short periods in between where we are both in our separate countries.

Will we be able to keep this type of behaviour the same after we get married, and after we start the application process? Is there anything we should be aware of or extra precautions to take when crossing the border?

thanks!!

Hi there,
I was a foreign worker who married a Canadian and been sponsored by him. So I can only advice on marrying in Canada part.
No there should not be any extra things you need to get a marriage license. Besides proof that he was divorced, that is recognized by
the local registry.

All I remember bringing was my driver's license/passport, proof of address, and birth certificate. for both of us.
Then 10 mins, $80ish dollars and an oath later we got the license and got married within the validity of the license.

They will even give you advice on how to contact a licensed marriage commissioner within your area. (Prices of hiring them differ from each person so you have to do your research and call them one by one. I also believe it's better to meet them before hand to see if their personality or technique is a match to what you want on your day.)

Goodluck!

Congrats on your upcoming wedding! My wife and I got married in NYC and I soon sponsored her shortly after. You don't need any extra document. Your NY marriage certificate is all your need.

If you will be doing frequent border crossings, you may start getting some extra scrutiny after marriage. Someone who was doing something similar said the border officials started to give her a hard time when they started to recognize her. Getting NEXUS would be a big help for both of you.

@marsiangal - Thanks for the info! We are leaning towards getting married in Canada and have a potential spot picked out already.

@keesio - That's what I'm worried about. Right now I cross the border A LOT and I don't want to mess that up. The good thing is I already have Nexus, and I'm the one who does the majority of the travelling so I'm hopefully covered!
