My husband is currently in the process of applying for our marriage certificate. I'm an American and he is a Canadian that lives in Ontario, Canada. As we want to make sure we are getting the correct certificate for the application for the spousal sponsorship/permanent residency we want to know should we be getting the file sized marriage certificate or the certified marriage certificate or does it even matter? All help is very much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
I would say apply for both. From what I've been reading on the forums, some officers ask for long form, others ask for short form. In my opinion, send both in. That's what I'll be doing for my application, to avoid delays.
I second what CLYL said. There is a thread not too far down where someone had a long form and they requested the file size. It isn't that much more to get both, so I'd get both and send copies of both. Better safe than sorry.
You can submit both long and form marriage certificates to be "SAFE". But I think the other thread " Long Form Marriage Certificate USELESS!! " regarding CIC rejecting "long form" marriage certificate was an isolated incident that was completely the CIC agent's stupidity and agent's fault. No fault on the applicant's part in sending in the long form as it is also a legal certificate of marriage. No reason at all for CIC to reject the "long form" certificate.
We submitted as I am sure the majority have, sent in the short form certificates if marriage occurred in Canada. I am sure there are others who married outside Canada and have no choice but to submit "long form" marriage certificate as it may be their only option. No "short form" certificate exists in some other countries.
