Long wait after Approval in Principle?

Hi there, I am asking this for someone who is sponsoring wife and dependent child within Canada. They had an interview during stage 1 to determine the authenticity of the marriage and after a period of questioning + interview, they successfully received the approval in principle in I believe September/October. However, nothing has developed since then. Whenever they call for updates, the same answer is given that background security checks are being completed, and they do not need a new medical, fingerprints or any more documents from the couple. Is this wait typical? How much longer should they expect to wait? Thank you!

What is their timeline?
When did they originally apply?

I am a March 2017 inland applicant and My background check went into process on April 27, 2017. After 2 months of no updates, i call them to see whats going on. They said it is still in progress. There is no specific timeline for it to be done. They said all i need to do is wait till i hear from them.\ for updates.
