My boyfriend is born and raised in qatar but holds a Iranian passport (phew!). He is in his 30s but is on a student visa in Qatar because he doesn't want to go under his employers sponsorship (he is not in college). Will his status in ( which I think is illegal) look bad and go against him if sponsor him after we get married?

No - it won't be an issue provided he is 100% honest in his application about his status. What IRCC is really looking to see is that your relationship is genuine. As long as that's good and he's honest about his status, you should have no issues.

Thanks for the quick reply! I wonder if there are more cases like this on this forum.
I want to be sure, because I will moving to Canada leaving everything behind in US, so that we can be together.

There are certainly threads around but you'll have to hunt and peck for them. Might want to try to use the seach feature.
I know there's a discussion somewhere in the Express Entry section that deals with people who are out of status in the U.S. and are applying to immigration through economic immigration streams.
