My partner and I (samesex) have been dating for 2 years. He applied for a TRV but on the letter and application it was stated that he was a relative. His TRV was denied. We plan to get married in the States next year and then I sponsor him. I have read the application could be denied and him being banned from entering canada. we are not sure what can can do.

I think the first mistake you made was him lying on his application. It would have been better if you put "friend" not "relative". If you guys do get married and you file to sponsor him, it will raise a red flag to immigration when they pull up the records for the TRV he applied for and see on that he was listed as "relative" and now on your sponsorship he is listed as as spouse.

It is a tricky situation , I would suggest finding a lawyer to consult with.

Goodluck!! I hope things work out for you

I agree about consulting a lawyer. You don't have too many options here though. If/when they discover the discrepancy, I think you can expect an interview forthcoming. If that happens you have to tell the truth and be very regretful about your bad decisions. I suppose there's a chance they won't look too closely at the visa application, but I would not count on that.

It might be best to simply write out a long, heartfelt explanation about the misinformation on that visa application, admit fault upfront and get it over with, and they can decide what to do about it. But I am not a lawyer so just take this advice with a grain of salt.
