I received a letter from CIC stating I have been approved and meet the requirements of a sponsor (for my American wife).

Would this be considered first stage approval?

FirsT of all, congratulations on stage one could you please give more detail? when and where (VO) did you applied? with the letter, was there the new open work permit for your wife or did they invite her to apply? ...

Hi! I applied in Alberta, but submitted an out land spousal. The letter only said I was approved as a sponsor, nothing else.

For those of us anxiously tracking how fast they're approving sponsors with the strike, do you know when your application was received?

The term 1st stage approval or approval in principle generally applies to the PR applicant for inland applications. This is the point at which the open work permit is processed. For outland there is no such thing, only the approval of the sponsor. After the sponsor is approved, the sponsored persons PR application is forwarded to the VO for review.
