Length of stay for a visitor from the UK. passport stamps & ETA

I thought i had a grip on this issue but i have heard different accounts so i am looking to clarify.

I was under the impression that as a uk citizen visiting canada i would have 6 months leave to stay but i have read a few comments that suggest if the immigration officer puts a leave date on your passport based on the date of your return flight you can stay only up to that date. i wanted the option to stay on in canada a little longer. do i need to apply for a new visitor visa if i want to stay past the date of the return flight?

If you're not give a 6 month visit and want to stay longer, you would apply for an extension from within Canada towards the end of your visit.

thank you for your answer and your time. i will be arriving in canada to be married and apply for PR through the spousal visa program which i understand has been reworked and is being changed on december 15th 2017.

currently i am led to believe that a tourist visa extension request must be submitted at least 30 days before the date that is stamped on the passport and that the application to extend must include proof of the spousal application as well as proof that i have the funds to support myself/my partner has the funds to support me. i believe i can ask for an extension that will keep me legal during the time it takes to process the spousal visa which, if the latest news regarding the spousal visa application process, will require a 12 month extension. currently the inland application is taking 27 months which would possibly require several extensions during the application process.

FYI - the 30 days is a guideline and not a requirement.
