Hi Everyone
I have an event in Mexico which I go to every year in February (just for a week). I would like to go with my husband and don't want any issues getting back into Canada.
I am an Australian married to a Canadian and put in a spousal sponsorship in April. I have already received my new open work permit (2 years) but it says on the bottom it cant be used as a travel document. (My first open work permit when I came to Canada let me travel back and forth with no problem)
What I want to know is....... Will I have any trouble getting back into Canada?
I just want to check before I make arrangements. On the plus side - The immigration at Canada airport will see that im travelling with my husband and also from my travel history that I go to mexico every February for a very short time.
I expect my PR to come in April/May next year but I really don't want to miss out on this event. How can I know if im okay to Travel?
Thank you

You can't absolutely know you're okay to travel. There's no guarantee that you'll be let back in. The only people who have a right to be let into the country are citizens and permanent residents. Everyone else (including people with study and work permits, travel visas, etc) are at the mercy of the immigration officers.
As an Australian married to a Canadian and traveling together, your chances of being denied entry are certainly much smaller than for someone coming from a third world country, but you can still never be absolutely sure. This is why it's always advised against traveling unless you absolutely have to, to minimize the chances of anything going wrong.
People have traveled and come back normally. It's just that there's always that possibility of your particular immigration officer having a bad day and then that leading into a bad year for you, you know?

There is always a small inherit risk in leaving Canada due to being denied re-entry to Canada. Nothing is guaranteed but the risk is small. How you want to take this risk is up to you. Travelling with your husband does help reduce the risk of being denied re-entry.
