I am a new Canadian PR and I am planning to visit my family in my home country for about 8 months (or slightly more than 1 year) this year.
Some people said leaving Canada for more than 6 months out of 12 months should be a big problem when I will renew my PR card later on.
However, according to CIC website, as long as I fulfill 2 years of physically being in Canada out of 5 years, there should be no problem to keep my PR status. I am confused.
There is no such 6 months rule and as long as you continue to meet the 2 years out of 5 residency obligation your PR continues to be safe. Also keep in mind that after the initial 5 years from landing if you leave the country then the 2 years must be met in the 5 years before each new entry back into the country
when you travel outside of Canada you must ensure you take your PR card with you given without it you would not be able to board a plane back unless you have it or apply for a PRTD from outside Canada.
For future reference always consult the CIC website for information, do not worry unecessarily by listening to rumours.
You also must call you provincial health provider to notify of your long absence. You will likely not qualify for healthcare services in Canada this year if you are gone that long. Please look into the residency requirements to remain covered by your provincial health plan.
