Hello all! New member of the forum here, so forgive me if my question/s have already been answered elsewhere.

My fiancé is Canadian and I’m British, I will be flying out to Canada on the 10th March to hopefully stay! We are getting married on the 25th of March and will be submitting the application for sponsorship as soon as we have the documentation of our marriage.

A question has popped up in my mind, however, and my researching has come up short. I wish to change my last name after the wedding, which as I understand would mean I’d need renew my passport. Should we:
a. Renew the passport first so that it has my married name on it, then apply for sponsorship with my married name after I’ve received the new passport.
b. Apply for sponsorship with my married name, despite my passport having my maiden name.
c. Apply for sponsorship with my maiden name, send off passport for renewal, then change the last name once the new passport has arrived.

I guess I’m more so worried about if we apply for sponsorship and renew the passport at the same time, that my passport won’t arrive in time for when the visa office will want to see it? And I’m worried that if I put my maiden name on it, then change it later, they might think something is dodgy?

Hopefully you can clear the fog in mind around this!

Thanks in advance.

Hi

a. If you are OK with the delay, sure.

b. Not possible. The application must be in the exact name of your passport.

c. Best option.

Prefer OPTION C:

Change your maiden name to your married name immediately after your marriage.......submit your application after your marriage.......apply for a new passport with your married name as surname.

You are allowed to send your passport information after submitting your Application…….. your complete application will be accepted and processed.........but must later send the passport to IRCC, as it will be required in the final application sponsorship processing stage when PR visa is granted.

Refer to the IRCC Spousal Sponsorship Checklist……IMM5533……..

Note: Although you do not need to have a valid passport or travel document when you submit your application, you must have a valid travel document or passport to be able to travel to Canada and to be admitted for permanent residence.
You will need to demonstrate that you hold an acceptable travel document or passport before we can finalize your application.

You can’t submit the spousal sponsorship application until after your marriage in March 2018.

When you apply your Surname in the Application will be your Married Name (and not your Maiden Name).

The name used in the application MUST be the name in the current passport, regardless of whether it is the maiden or married name.

Thanks for the responses.

After looking into the renewal of my U.K. passport, I read that it’ll take up to 10 weeks for my new passport to arrive. As we’re applying inland, going to the U.K. to quicken the process isn’t an option so we’ll have to wait.

My next concern is that it won’t be back in time for when the visa office requests my passport to be sent in. How long does it take from the start of an application before they request the passport? Is 10 weeks enough time?
Perhaps I should wait until my new passport arrives before we apply for sponsorship, just in case?

I also read that any outstanding visas in my current passport will be void, does this mean I will no longer have temporary status in Canada? Will having no stamps in the new passport affect my status?

You don't send in your actual passport. You send a copy with the app and will need to send a copy of the new one when you get it. No need to worry about 10 weeks when your PR app will likely take a year or more to process.

You don't have a visa to Canada. You have visitor status and that remains valid for as long as it was granted, even if you get a new passport.
