Hello all,
I have just finished my study (Ph.D) in the USA and am currently still in the USA (I am an Indonesian). I'd like to start a career in Canada and really have no clue of where to start. My quick questions:
1. How to best search jobs in CA? (I have sent applications in the past 2 months but havent heard anything from the employeers)
2. Is it necessary to hire immigration attorney to help the immigration process?
3. Where sould I start if my plan A (getting a job offer) doesnt work?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Generally speaking, it's quite difficult to find a job in Canada as a foreign worker. In order for you to be able to apply for a work permit, your employer must not only give you a full time job offer but must also obtain something called an approved LMIA. This is a very long and expensive process with no guarantee of approval that requires your employer to advertise the job for at least a month (before even applying) to prove no Canadian could be found for the role. Once the LMIA application is submitted, processing typically takes several months. Because the process is so long and expensive, most employers aren't willing to go through it.
To answer your questions:
1) You just have to keep applying and hope you get lucky and find an employer willing to go through the LMIA process.
2) You don't need an immigration lawyer and an immigration lawyer can't help you find a job.
3) Get at least a year of work experience and then look into applying to immigrate to Canada.
Dear Scylla,
Thanks soooo much for your explanation, it helps a lot! Regarding job experience, I have worked as a teacher in universities both in Indonesia and in the USA. Would that work? Or does it mean that I need to get a work experience in Canada? I believe that I need to have a work experience in Canada in order to be able to apply for a PR in Canada? I hope I understand it correctly? Thanks again.
No - you don't need to have work experience in Canada to qualify for PR. Canada has many different immigration programs with different requirements. If you are serious about your intention to move to Canada, you're going to have to spend time researching what it takes to immigrate. You can find this detailed information here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/apply.asp
Aww, many thanks, Cylla! Journey begins now
