I received my PPR recently and I am planning on getting married prior to moving to Canada and in my research I found out that you can get married before landing and it will cancel your existing COPR and once the partner's application is accessed new COPR will be issued for the couple. The lawyer I used for my processes so far straight up told me that it cannot be done and the only way I can do it is by sponsoring my SO for which I need to land at least once and then marrying & sponsoring, he told me that getting married after COPR would raise red flag for IRCC. I am wondering why he give me this kind of information when my research suggests it is ok to get married before first landing.

Yes, he is lying. I am almost in your situation. I got married after PPR, added my wife, and now IRCC is now processing our application. These lawyer and consultant lie because the Spousal Sponsorship takes more than a year and they have more opportunity to milk money from you. If you add your wife before landing, you would be spending less as processing times are shorter vs spousal sponsorship.

Don't do that. Visitor visa may be rejected and it is happening for many. Don't you think its better to add your spouse and land together? If you apply for visitor visa better have a solid reason why your spouse will leave Canada.

I am not sure about your risk appetite. If you got your PR and Landed your PR process is complete now you can marry or divorce or do whatever you want its not a concern for IRCC. If you got your PPR and something changed you are supposed to give that Information to IRCC same email its likely for them to reject the case since everything is approved and addition of spouse need to be done before everything expired.
I can give you two examples.
1) A person Landed and flown back after a Month got married brought her wife on Visit/Parallel applied for Spousal Visa. Registration of marriage must be Post landing and within 6 Months he was with his Wife who got PR approved within next 5 Months without going back to her home country.
2) A person got PPR her wife become pregnant so she stayed at her mother place for the baby. He delayed his Landing to add the baby and after 3-4 Months he landed with the baby.
It is now up to you how you want to go with your situation.
