I tried searching for this topic but couldnt seem to find a similar post. My dad is a newcomer who got his PR in 2024 under parent/grand parent sponsorship (sponsored by me). I am doing his tax for 2024. I am wondering if he would be eligible for GST/HST credit if he doesnt make any money in 2024? I understand that for parent/grand parent sponsorship, the sponsor is supposed to take care of their finance for 20 years so not sure if GST/HST falls under the finance category?

Sadly it is sold as children take full financial responsibility for their parents which is actually not the case. Other than not being able to receive welfare for 20 years (10 years QC) parents have access to all programs, “free” healthcare, low income senior programs, etc. Many in Canada are either unaware or somehow think children are paying for healthcare and other expenses. There would likely be more pushback if they were aware.

that is so true. I thought as long as it involved money payment, parents are not eligible to receive them. What do you mean by low income senior programs? I wish there is a list of what they are entitled to and what they are not entitled to. Thanks for your post.
