Is it mandatory for visitors to come with a round trip flight ticket?

Hi,


Need some advice with in-laws visiting Canada for the first time.


My in-laws will be coming from India to Canada in February on visitor’s visa. They plan to stay here for 4-5 months. Someone told me that it is now mandatory for visitors to get a roundtrip flight ticket(they can’t do a one way ticket) while visiting Canada else they will be denied to boarding the aircraft at the source country. Is that true?


I know this was not a requirements 3-4 years back. My inlaws are not sure if they would like to go back in a month or 4 months, so cant really book there return flight at this point.

Reasons why you should buy return flight tickets:
1. The airline may not allow them to board the flight if they don't have return bookings.

2. CBSA could ask them to show their return tickets at the POE

3. It is cheaper to book refundable tickets (which allow for the return flights to be re-booked/dates to be changed) than one-way tickets

4. TRVs/visitor visas are temporary visas for short-stays

From personal experience, it’s mandatory on major airlines flying into Canada. They will deny boarding at the airport if you don’t have a return ticket.

That's what my friend told me this morning. I will cancel the onway ticket I booked for my inlaws and will re-book a round trip flight ticket to avoid any problems at the source airport.

Also from experience, if you book a return flight (one way) at the airport just before departure, you can cancel it when you land and clear customs in Canada. Air Canada has a 24 hour cancellation policy that allows full refunds. The return flight doesn’t have to be on the same booking (or even to Their Home country for that matter... just out of Canada).
