I'm from the US (Texas) and I'm currently studying in Quebec. I'm on a student visa and I can work 20 hours per week. I'm scheduled with 5 and a half hour shifts across four days. I have the option to take a 30 minute unpaid lunch to make it 5 hours per day, but I choose to take a paid 15 minute break instead, so my total work time ends up being around 22 hours per week instead of 20. Is it okay or is it illegal and I need to adjust my hours?
EDIT: Also, my boss tells us to NOT log off our computer before our end shift time. I work in a call center, so if I get a call right before my shift ends, I must take it and sometimes end up working a few minutes over the clock so no matter what, I'm usually 20.5 hours per week if I don't opt for the 15 minute break over the lunch. Is that illegal? Does it have to be EXACTLY 20 hours?
Okay, so I'm going to start taking a 30 minute lunch then to make it 20 hours per week. I'm not supposed to clock out if I'm on a call which is why I could be working for 10 minutes or so after my shift is supposed to end. Should I start clocking out, even if I'm on a call, to try to make it EXACTLY 20 hours? Or is a few minutes over okay?
I'm going to contact the border directly for this, but was wanting answers now to ease my nerves. I don't want this to adversely affect my record with the Canadian government as I plan to immigrate here.
that should not be a major issue ,if you are being payed for 20hours only, thats what your SIN records
if u are being payed for 22 hours its problem.
to what i understand 5 and half hours is ur work time out of which 30 minutes in unpayed.
so if u jest take 15 minutes u still get payed same , but working more.
