I'm an international graduate student, above 22 years old and want my parents to visit. They have an invitation letter from me and my mom's cousin who is a citizen. The new IRCC portal asks "Why do you need a visa" and these are the options relevant to my case:

1. To visit my spouse, common-law partner, dependent child, parent, step-parent, guardian or tutor who is in Canada temporarily, such as an international student or temporary worker
2. To visit my grandparent, grandchild, sibling, half-sibling, step-sibling or non-dependent child who is a Canadian citizen, person registered under Canada's Indian Act or permanent resident of Canada
3. To visit other family who are not listed above or friends for less than 6 months
4. To visit my children or grandchildren for more than 6 months (super visa)

I don't think option 1 is correct because I'm not a dependent. Option 2 is out because I'm not a permanent resident. Option 3 would make sense but I really want them to get a visa for longer than 6 months. Is that possible? Is the 6-months limit for their stay or their visa? Option 4 is also out because I read that only parents of Canadian citizens can request a super visa.

Option 3. They are not eligible to stay for longer than 6 months. They can come to Canada and ask for an extension. It can be denied. Also CBSA will determine upon entry how long they can stay so can be a few weeks. If they are coming for more than 6 months then their ties are very weak to return.

They don't want to stay for longer than 6 months but can the visa be valid for more? I want them to have a visa so they can visit for a month when I'm graduating next year.

You cannot tell IRCC how long they will stay. If CBSA doesn’t stamp their passport on entry then they can stay up to 6 months. If they get a multi entry visa, then they can visit Canada at another time. They will know if visa is approved if multi entry or just single entry. They need to focus on making sure their profile is strong for a visa.
