I'm a Canadian citizen and my wife is a US citizen. Both living in the United States right now and our desire is to move to Canada in November (8 months). Applying outland seems like it's going to push is way past that date based on processing times so just considering inland.

Is inland an option that makes sense? I'd move back and once I'm setup she'd come to visit then get the paperwork going and apply for an open work permit at that point? Or is that a bit risky/presumptuous that she'll be allowed into Canada as a visitor given the situation?

The alternative seems to be go with outland and either just wait for it to be fully processed or she come in November and just not be able to work until the application goes through.

Just trying to figure out options and we we go outland we'll have to start it asap.

Honestly, applying inland makes absolutely no sense (I mean, like, 0% sense) if you are not wanting to move until November. Most US applicants, outland, are being processed in 5-6 months right now. Apply outland now and she'll likely be able to land as a PR at the time of your move in November, or very shortly afterwards, depending on when you get your app in. If, for whatever reason, the application was not approved by the time November rolls around, she'll just have to spend a few months not being able to work (which would be the case if you applied inland anyway).

If you apply inland you would have to wait till November to apply, and she would not get her work permit until 4 months after that.

Awesome - thanks KBH. Exactly what I was hoping to hear.

The processing time on the website says 12 months outland even for US so I was just taking it as face value. It also said work permits were taking 5-6 weeks to process but maybe that's after me being approved to sponsor in the first place so puts it around the same time anyway.

Thanks again!

The work permit processing times given on the website do not apply to the OWP issued with an inland sponsorship app. The processing time is 3-4 months after submission, so if you come here in November and apply right away, she would not receive the OWP until Feb-Mar.

Agree with above that it makes no sense to wait to apply inland. Apply outland now.

Yup, for most straight forward cases from US applicants. your case most likely will be approved in 5 months range counting from the day that CIC received your application. But, if your case has some potential bumps, like not enough evidences, prior charges or something like that, then it will take much longer to approve.
