Yes, many people think so.
But, the truth it is not more easy or difficult that it is different.
So, you need to prepare for GT even you went for Academic before.
Someone I know was asked to submit GT instead of Academic (which was submitted with the application). Since the person did not do any serious preparation since sitting for Acadmic IELTS score GT was lower than for Academic.
Therefore get yourself ready for GT. Don't take it for granted.
