Yeah, even after successfully landing the questions keep coming.
One, I'm a US citizen living in Canada so I know I have to file some crazy tax forms pretty soon here. Any advice on pulling that off?
Two, is it possible to use income-based repayment on US federal (public) student loans while living in Canada? IBR or ICR, either way. I can't find anything that says you can't, but there does (maybe) appear to be restrictions on unemployment deferments for the loan, but only for certain types? They're multiple different things at play, and there's legalese at work here that I haven't been able to cut through.
Three, I landed in late July but I still don't have a PR card. Is that normal?
Four, I'm still curious to see my case notes. How does one go about that?
3 - first sign into ECAS to see what it says about your PR card processing. If it was mailed, it would say "complete". then, call the PR Card call center (same as the regular call center) and tell them it has not been received yet. They will confirm if/when it was mailed, and if it was mailed out more than 6 weeks ago, they will advise you to fill out a "solemn declaration" to send to the syndey, NS office to start the process of getting a new one issued. They will not allow you to initiate a request until 6 weeks has passed since it was mailed.
I landed in August and still have not received mine, even though it was mailed out on Oct 21. it is now presumed lost in the mail by CIC, and I am starting the process of getting it reissued. it appears it may take a long period of time to actually get a card, according to the CIC site (though we all know those processing times are not always accurate). At least, as US citizens, it's not vital for us to have a card for traveling purposes.
