Depends where you are from. If traditional marriages are the norm in your country and you decide to do a simple court marriage, this can result in your application being refused if CIC doesn't believe the relationship is genuine.
For immigration purposes, if you are in Canada the marriage needs to be registered. If you are in your own country and want to apply for pr here, then you would need to have a traditional marriage and your spouse will have to first sponsor you so that you can claim those points to apply for pr.
