How to apply for 120-day work visa exemption?

I understand the regulations for the 120 day work permit exemption, but how do you apply for it? I have been invited to assist with research at an intitution affiliated with a University for 2 months. This is unpaid work. How do I apply for a work permit exemption?

I think I will also be required to apply for a TRV.

If you are visa exempt, you apply for an eTA. If you are non-visa exempt, then you apply for a TRV.

The 120 day work permit exemption is determined at the border when you arrive based on the paperwork you bring.
