I am currently planning a stay in Canada where I'll apply for a work permit. If possible, I'd love to travel around in Canada before I start working and after my work permit expires. Unfortunately, I did not find out how long I am allowed to do so?
(I know that in the US for example, I can arrive up to 30 days before and have to leave within 30 days of my visa restrictions)
So how exactly do you intend to apply for a work permit , under which immigration program ? Do you already have an LMIA sponsor set up with a job offer for example ?

You fall out of status in Canada as soon as your work permit expires. If you want to remain in Canada afterwards legally, you need to apply to change your status to visitor before your work permit expires.

Thanks! Are there any rules for the total amount of time I am allowed to stay; or does this depend from case to case (i.e. if my aplciation for a visitor visa is accepted)?

No rules. Case by case. It's quite possible the processing of your extension will take longer than a month. You have implied status while the application is being processed and can legally remain in Canada while you wait for a decision.
