How is the "5 years from obtaining PhD" limit for Canadian postdocs counted?

I understand that Canadian universities apply the "5 years from obtaining PhD" limit to postdocs. However, I am confused about exactly how this is counted. Specifically, do I have to
1) GET the postdoc position within 5 years of defending my PhD thesis, or
2) FINISH the postdoc contract within these 5 years?
