How Important is Last name Sponcering Wife From India....

1. My Canadian Citizen relative married to Indian wife.
2. Marriage registered and Medical done.
3. My concern is,her passport is without her last name.......does this make any immigration concern ??????
4. Does she need to add her husband last name in passport before processing application or she can do it later on after coming in Canada.......?????
5. What immigration system or process requirement for this is.....
6. Any link for this....

CIC couldn't care less if the wife takes the husband's name. They won't think any more or less of your application either way. Our application was also processed through New Delhi and I never took my husband's last name and it was no issue. I was the sponsor though. If your wife WANTS to change her last name, that's her choice. If she is going to do it then I would suggest that you do that before you begin your application.

Considering taking the husband's last name doesn't matter so much, it's a non-issue.

However it's my personal belief it may just be easier not to change it (if you haven't been married very long. Obviously couples who have been married for many years will already have all of their documents changed). All of our proofs and all of my information is in my maiden name. I think it will make more sense to CIC seeing just one last name throughout. However I know they see all different variations on a daily basis so in the end... no worries! ;-D

Hi,

If she want to add the Surname ( family name) of husband, she should go to the passport office, fillup an application given from there, together with copy of the Marriage certificate and a photo. She should show the original marriage certificate at the passport office. Usually it is done within 2-3 days. As other members said adding husband's name is not a an important factor and not compulsory.

My wife's passport only has first name. No Last name.
In the sponsorship letter, they put as First Name FirstName both for FirstName and LastName
In the Buffalo Immigration letters, they say Null for FirstName and FirstName as LastName.
So I guess, it is an non-issue. However, if you add the spouse name in the passport, it would help you from many headaches in the future(which we are facing in the U.S). Many processes took a while in US..Like opening up a bank account, going to get Drivers licence etc because of one name..some places put FNU for firstname(FNU-First Name Unknown) and they call her FooNoo literally

I sympathize though. My husband also doesn't have a last name, but has 2 first names, so they just put his first name as his 'given' name and his 2nd name as his last name. Problem is he goes by his 2nd name so it causes lots of confusion!!
