How do I explain to customs?

I'm going into the Canada through family sponsorship to live with my boyfriend for a year so we can apply under common law. The last time i went to Canada for a visit and stayed there for 3 months, the customs officer asked me "how do I know that you will be returning to the US?" and I had to show him my returning flight. My question is what am I suppose to say to the immigration officer when I go through customs, do I explain that ill be there for family sponsorship and id apply to extend my stay at 6 months? They also make me fill out a card to write how many days id be staying in Canada as well, do i leave that blank and explain it the to officer when i speak to him? i'm not sure how to go about this.

I would suggest buying a round trip flight so that there aren’t issues when crossing and so that they don’t make your life too difficult.
Since you’re from the US, you can only really stay here 6 months at a time. I’d recommend just applying for a visitor’s extension online in that case.
