Hi everyone,

I meet my boyfriend a year ago in Australia. He is from Colombia but has been living in Australia on a student visa for the past two years, while I was there on a working holiday visa. After 4 months of relationship, I had to leave since my visa was expiring. We kept in contact since then and I was planning on going back to visit for a few weeks, but due to the Corona Virus, it's impossible now. He also applied for a tourist visa, but the process is on hold now because of the situation.

We were thinking about the possibilities for him to come here and work and we could stay together. I just got a new job and planning to buy a house in the next 2-3 months and so just feels right for him to come here. But I don't know how he could come here.

I don't believe we make it into the spouse/common-law sponsorship as we have been together for a year but haven't lived together. He is just doing a certificate in business in Australia and working in manufacturing./forklifting things there. He also has a trading company in Colombia that is doing well. What would be the options we have?

Is there a special visa type for couples in this situation? He doesn't seem to fit in the work permit category either. Is there a temporary resident permit he could apply for?

I know marriage is one solution, but we will like marriage to be more natural than just for the papers for him to come here. If it is the only and last solution we will do it. But how can we see if we could work in a marriage-like situation if they don't give us a temporary residence permit for us to see and get into the 12 months of common-law partnerships?

Thank you and be safe.

Unfortunately there are no special programs for this.

A TRV would only allow him to visit Canada as a tourist - not work here. If he gets an approved TRV, he can certainly come here and you can live together for 12 months to become common law.

If he wants to apply for a closed work permit, he would need to first secure a job offer in Canada and an approved LMIA from his employer.
