Hotels/B&B for first few days of landing?

Upon landing, I'm planning to stay in a Hotel or Bed & Breakfast, with my wife and 1-year old child. Perhaps up to 7 days. I have a few questions though:

1. I noticed the hotels near the airport are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the ones in downtown. Given that in the first few days I will be looking for a permanent apartment/condo to stay, would it be a good idea to stay in the hotels near the airport for the cheaper rates, or pay extra for the ones in downtown?

2. In your opinion: Is 7-days too long or too short, for me to find an apartment/condo?

It depends your efforts and search. Probably you could find a suitable place within a week itself.
