help old passport cancer and taking away can i use new one for Citizenship

Hello everyone 8 month after i got my PR my country change the country passport and the old one were not return back to me when i got the new one from my embassy here in canada when i ask for the old one back they said if it was renewal or the country still used the same passport they can retune it to me but they said they went to get them out of serculation that is why they change the passport the old passport was the one i land with my friend told me i will need the old passport for my Citizenship, have never left canada since i got my PR he told me CIC will like to know what happen in that 8 month for my days in canada please help
