Help! Can I extend my current status while waiting for PR?

We just sent away our sponsorship application and OWP request last week and my status as a student expires after this month. I heard you could apply to extend your status (or change it, in my case, since I'm no longer going to study). Is this accurate? Am I allowed to send this in even though I've applied for an OWP, isn't that the same form as this one?

Heard you aren't allowed to apply for two visas under the same class at the same time. Very confused. Help please.

You should apply to extend your stay as a visitor so you are covered in the event that your OWP is returned for any reason. If it's returned after your status expires as a student and you haven't extended as a visitor you'll be out of status.
