help a couple that wants to live in Canada

I Hope you can guide us.

My bf (Mexican) and I (Dominican) want to get marry. He went to study to Canada at the beginning of this year. He loves the country so he wants us to live there. After he finish his master, his plan is to apply for an extension of his student visa and change it for the work permit.
So the big question is...
how long we have to be married so I can apply for an open work permit ( if we consider he already has a work permit)?

Do you know another way for us to live together in Canada?

As soon as you have your marriage certificate, you can apply for an open work permit as the spouse of an international student. You do of course also have to prove that you will not overstay your visa etc.

If you wait until he completes his studies to do this, he will have to prove that he has a skilled job in order for you to qualify for an open work permit.
